1941 Matchless G3L
|
It was clear talking to Brian
that he loved this machine. He’s had it 20 years and described it as the
most desirable, fastest and best to ride of the wartime bikes used
by Despatch Riders. On the
front of his jeep was a 1941 Welbike.
Made in
Birmingham
by the Excelsior Motor Co they are powered by a Villiers 98cc single cylinder
two stroke engine and much sought after. Devised at Station IX during the war
the name Welbike comes from the custom that all the clandestine equipment
devised at Station IX in Welwyn
had names starting with Wel. Now you
know.
